The Hidden Garden at the CAAC-Seville
EXPO92, Seville
Everyone in Seville knows the many secrets and spectacular places hidden in the area where the 1992 Universal Exhibition was held (also called La Cartuja). One of my favorites is the CAAC (Andalusian Center of Contemporary Art), located just a ten-minute walk from the main bus station (Plaza de Armas), from there you just have to reach the other side of river by crossing the Barqueta bridge – and perhaps stopping to cheer on one of the teams competing in one of the numerous rowing races that are held on the river Guadalquivir.
The CAAC will amaze you with its interesting contemporary art exhibitions located in a 19th-century monastery, which after its demise was turned into a ceramic factory. Discover its impressive sculptures (there is a massive head staring out of a window!), 30-meter high chimneys, and amazing hidden garden. Wander around these unknown but spectacular gardens, filled with the classic Sevillian orange trees (don’t eat the oranges, as they are sour and used to make British bitter orange marmalade!).
It’s a perfect place if you need a moment of silence because you’ll hardly find a soul around. Sit down on the stairs of any of the various small Arab-style buildings, adorned with traditional Sevillian tiles - this is just the perfect place to relax in Seville!
After walking around the whole place, you might be thirsty, in which case I would recommend that you check out the CAAC café. With a library inside and tables under the shining sun, this charming place will captivate you as soon as you walk in. There are also live jam sessions on Sundays! If you want to fall deeply in love order a tapa of “Boletus croquetas” and a Cruzcampo beer.
Last but not least, do not forget to check if there are any interesting exhibitions running. The contrast between contemporary art and the old monastery building is an unforgettable juxtaposition!
