Island Vele Srakane
A hidden gem in a Croatian archipelago
If you ask the majority of Croatian residents if they have ever heard of the island of Vele Srakane, you will most likely hear no as an answer. So it is not surprising that the island is the perfect place for those looking for a true break from a busy lifestyle and nature lovers.
The island of Vele Srakane (big Srakane) is one of the numerous Croatian islands, located west of Lošinj, between Susak and Unije, and north of the islet of Male Srakane (small Srakane). The length of the island is 2.5 km and the area is about 1.2 km2. Only three permanent residents live on the island, while the figure is slightly higher during the tourist season because of the people who have holiday homes there. The inhabitants of the island are engaged in organic farming and in fact the whole island is a large organic farm full of diverse animals.
The island is dominated by rocky beaches, but there are several spots for swimming and sunbathing. It is possible to walk the island all the way to the small hill of Vela straža, which offers a beautiful view of the nearby islands and Vele Srakane itself. On the hill was a prehistoric fortress for defence against marine robbers, and today are visible the remains of a semicircular wall.
Since there are no cars, shops and running water on the island, all the supplies should be brought along. The island can be reached by regular Jadrolinija ferry line departing from Mali Lošinj, and when returning to civilisation, it is necessary to contact the ship's personnel, otherwise the ship will not stop at the port.
Vela Srakane is not for everyone. Anyone who chooses to spend a vacation here must be a true nature lover and the type of person who does not need restaurants, cafes and places to party. For those of Robinson's spirit, this island is the perfect place to rest your body and soul.
