Puerto Rico's Comida Rica

Where to eat and drink in this fabulous get-away

La Casita Blanca

San Juan continues to be the leading LGBTQ destination in the Caribbean and Puerto Rico Pride happens in San Juan the first weekend of June. Perhaps Puerto Rico isn't perfect, but it remains the most safe in a region - so it's also the best place to enjoy Caribbean cuizine! Even though you might be headed to Pride - or just to the beach - you're going to want to indulge in the many food options once you arrive.

Even Buzzfeed agrees that Puerto Rico has the best food. I truly enjoyed the all the dishes - especially fish tacos - and amazing rum drinks! First you must enjoy the most local of dishes - mofongo - pickled and fried plantains mashed together with other spices or meats (depending on your preference). In Puerto Rico it's all about fish and plantains! One of my favorite destinations is La Casita Blanca (cover photo), a quick ride from the center.

But along with your meal, you're going to want a drink. The best mojito I found on the island is at Taberna Los Vazquez located in La Placita in Santruce where everyone goes to start and often end their evening. You can dance and drink there first before heading out to nearby gay bars. When the live music ends – head over to Tia Maria's, a classic gay dive and then cross the street to chill on the roof of the gay-friendly Santos Rooftop. To complete the LGBTQ tour, end up at club Circo - you have to remember that Puerto Ricans party late, so you can't arrive here earlier than 1am.

But of course, you'll also want to enjoy a nice drink on the beach - and if you'd like to BOYB - this is the only place I've found liquor in juice-pack form! These kid-like drink boxes don't exist back in the contiguous 48. My favorite was the Rum Punch - but you can make your selection at any grocery.
