Moku Surf
A little surfshop with big value
Confession: Although I live over an hour away, I rarely go a week without making a trip up to Playa Jobos in Isabela. And whenever I’m in the area, I just have to stop in at Moku Surf. Sharing a patio with Uma’s Jobos, it’s a small boutique surf shop that faces the endless, rolling sets Jobos has to offer.
The vibes are super low-key, and you can usually find the staff going back and forth between the bar and the board shop, interacting with locals and newcomers alike as if they were family. But beyond the laid-back ambience and friendliness, the prices are the reason I’m always stopping in to Moku.
I’m a pretty indecisive person and often I’ll find myself at Jobos for a drink on a whim with no board and the waves looking all too tempting. Normally, it’d be too much to leave the bar at Uma’s, hop back into the car and go searching for a surf shop. But with Moku renting out boards for seven dollars an hour, twenty dollars for the day, just steps away, catching a few waves is as simple as finishing my beer.
The boards they rent are kept in good condition on the side of the shop. Best of all, the money you spend on renting, if you rent multiple times, can be put towards the total price of the high-performance shortboards they sell. Honestly, even when I’ve got my board on me, I’ll still go in and pick up a little wax or something small, just to chop it up with the staff and support a local Puerto Rican business. It’s a great little shop, steps away from the beach and the bar. You can’t ask for more.
