Uma’s Jobos
A Seaside Staple in a Surfer’s Paradise
The cool, white beachwood deck of Uma’s beckons from a distance. While most of the surrounding restaurants sit tucked back behind the palms, Uma’s juts out towards the water, putting its patrons right in the center of the scene. For this reason, its quickly become my homebase for a day of surfing in Jobos. I love the fact that I can prop my board on the fence, order a Medalla, and by the time I’ve made my way through the white gate that marks the beachside entrance, it’s on the bar: ready and ice cold.
Even on the days that I don’t feel like strapping my longboard to the top of my car, the deck provides a great vantage point to sit back and watch the locals rip laybacks as the sun sinks behind the waves.. As for the view, these pictures don’t do it justice. Because of its prime location, Uma’s panorama encompasses the whole of Jobos, from the massive cliff that creates the break, to the stretch of champagne sand as it curves into the distance, multicolored houses disappearing into salt mist.
Although Uma’s is a chain, with locations in Barcelona and Rockaway, the cuisine at Uma’s Jobos Beach, is a unique fusion of local and foreign. Their menu offers up Puerto Rican staples such as tostones and mofongo alongside more exotic faire such as jasmine rice and coconut shrimp.
The crowd as well, is a good mix of locals and the occasional transplant, the bartenders switching between English and Spanish seamlessly. Honestly, it’s one of the things I love the most about Uma’s. When you’re there, regardless of the language you speak, you’re among friends.
