Bratislava Christmas Markets
Get into the festive spirit at one of Central Europe’s best Christmas markets. Christmas markets are a traditional part of the holiday season across Europe. You can find amazing markets featuring local foods and handmade gifts in European capital cities and tiny villages across the continent. Last December, I visited Bratislava, Slovakia, and I fell into love with this little town.
Bratislava’s old town is similar to Prague with its candy-colored buildings lining the squares, but it’s much less touristy than similar Central European capitals. The town has several Christmas markets located throughout the city. The biggest is the market located in the old town square.
Here, you’ll find some of Slovakia’s most famous dishes, like potato pancakes with cheese and potato dumplings. I ate my way through this market, trying every dish I came across, from chimney cakes to mulled wine! At night, you can find live music in the busy square. For a great view of the market from above, go to the top of the old town hall tower.
I’ve been to several Christmas markets in Europe, and I loved that this market didn’t feel super touristy. All the signs were in the native language, and there weren’t any tourists packing the market. I would love to go back again next Christmas to revisit this lovely market- it’s a perfect way to celebrate the holidays!
