Jameos del Agua - Lanzarote

Lanzarote is one of the 8 islands of the Canary archipelago, this is the southwesternmost point of Spain. Lanzarote is one of the closest island to the African continent.

In the South corner of the island there is a small town called Playa Blanca (white beach). It used to be a fisherman's town but with time it grew into one of the most tourist cities, full of big all-inclusive resorts.

A “Jameo”, in the words of the natives, means the hole that appears on the ground when an underground lava tube collapses. The biggest one in Lanzarote appeared after one of the multiple volcanic eruptions that the island had suffered. It was caused by the Corona Volcano which provoked a huge lava underground tube running into the sea. When the lava stopped, this caverns remained.

Jameos del Agua was a project by the renowned Lanzaroteño architect César Manrique. He turned this place into 4 things. An underground restaurant, a swimming pool, a museum of volcanic activity and a concert hall. All of these, respecting the underground lagoon, filled with lots of blind crabs that only live there. This guy was really a genius.

It is easy to arrive there by car or by one of the various tourist bus departing from almost all the cities of the island. You know that I am a professional photographer, but this time I will say that my photos may not be enough for depicting the emotional and sensorial rollercoaster that this place put me through. If you ever visit this island, this is the “Must see”.
