Cactus, Cactus and More Cactus-Lanzarote
Guatiza, Lanzarote
At the Jardín de Cactus, designed by César Manrique, over 1,100 species of cacti fill a disused quarry on the island’s volcanic landscape. The last of Cesar Manrique's work in Lanzarote was to build this huge and varied cactus garden in Guatiza. The moment you arrive at this amazing place you can feel his influence in the design of the botanical garden. He even designed some of the cacti!
With almost 10.000 plants in a garden spanning across 5.000 m2, it is the perfect place to walk peacefully and contemplate.
From towering saguaros and spiny over-sized globes to more unusual species that resemble giant white maggots, thrusting asparagus spears, prickly mounds of broccoli, or dark green corals and sea anemones were curated here by Manrique as a botanical amphitheater, walled with bridges and paved paths carrying visitors to different levels.
The best way to reach the garden is probably by car (like every place else in Lanzarote) but there is also a bus station (buses 07, 09, 31, 33) really closeby.
The visit took us almost 2 hours, but if you want to check out every cactus you should stay longer!
In the middle of the botanic garden (it is shaped like a coliseum), there is a beautiful lake with fish swimming around. Also, there is a restored mill where you can take pictures of the views.
At the end of the visit, you can relax and spend some time at the stunning bar and cafe, again designed by him, including chunky mid-century furniture, an elegant spiral staircase, and curved wooden bar. We tried the fresh mango juice and it was delicious and refreshing!
