Showfish Restaurant - Montauk, NY
Our Review by Hero Traveler @eastendtaste
Located at Gurney’s Star Island Resort & Marina in Montauk, Showfish is a seafood-focused restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating that boasts peaceful, sound views of the marina. And if Executive Chef Jeremy Blutstein is leading the kitchen, you know that an impressive array of spot-on locally conceived plates crafted with some of the freshest ingredients around, including seafood that was caught ‘just hours ago.’ The menu at Showfish Restaurant rotates with the bounty of the season, and therefore will always have the opportunity to try a multitude of new dishes no matter how frequently you visit.
His menu features ingredients from some of our favorite local farms including Amber Waves Farm, Balsam Farm, Open Minded Organics, and Quail Hill Farm, to name a few. Chef Blutstein also sources from Happy Valley Meat Company in Brooklyn and a Forager in the Catskills.
We started with cocktails, including the South Fork Spritz: rose, Channing Daughters’ Vervino, Aperol, and Pink Grapefruit Juice ($15); and Cucumber Mule: cucumber-infused vodka, fresh cucumber juice, ginger beer, lime ($16). We both enjoyed these and would try the Tequila 2 Tequila made with fresh strawberries and lime with two types of tequila on our next visit to Montauk.
We ordered the following dishes during our visit:
Slightly Cured Montauk Fluke Crudo: cucumber, almond, horseradish ($19)
Scallop Carpaccio: ($20) huckleberry agrodolce, spiced cashew, Meyer lemon, basil oil marigold.
Tuna Crudo: preserved lemon, capers, pumpernickel crumble, smoked chili oil, nasturtium ($22)
Warm Carrot Salad: harissa tahini, pomegranate molasses, saffron pickled aliums, ricotta salata, sumac ($17)
The Spring ‘Greek’: sugar snap peas, Persian cucumbers, taggiasca olives, Sardinian whipped feta, mint ($18)
“Kimberly” Roasted Tilefish: vinegar braised leeks, chive blossom, crab toast, urfa biber (a dried Turkish chili pepper) ($38)
48 Day Dry Aged NY Strip Loin: smoked bone marrow, maître d’butter, spring panazella ($54)
Though it would be quite impossible to pick a favorite, we could not stop raving about the Scallop Carpaccio, which our waitress strongly recommended. The huckleberry agrodolce makes the dish and the flavors and spices are harmonious. This one’s a winner across the board.
Showfish also features a full raw bar featuring Peconic Gold Oysters, Long Island Little Neck Clams, Jonah Crab Claws, and more in addition to a selection of three plateaux seafood towers. A daily catch whole fish and whole lobster are also available. Lobsters range from 2 to 5lbs on average.
Dessert is an essential part of the experience at Showfish. The Foster Farm blackberry tart, with hibiscus curd, gentle ginger pastry cream, and mint is my favorite and one that my husband and I decided to split. Additional dessert options include the mango tembleque with coconut rice pudding, mango chutney, and shaved palm sugar; Not So Hot Chocolate with chocolate pudding, passionfruit curd, and brûlée marshmallow; and the Caramelized Banana Toffee Cake with candied cashews and banana ice cream ($14, each). There is also an Art & Andy’s Cheese plate with blueberry jam, Remy’s matzah, and fermented green almond honey ($28).
Showfish Restaurant is open for dinner from 5:30-10pm.
