Volunteering
A wonderful way to stay in Lipari
I’d decided early in the year, that I was going to follow my curiosity. So I applied to any volunteer program that looked as if my curiosity would be satisfied through them. That is how I landed the dream project at Casa Quattrochi. I spent 10 days, gardening, making jams, painting, reorganizing for future projects. I was in paradise... quite literally. Lipari is an Aeolian Island off of Sicily. It’s small, it’s charming, and it’s full of breath taking views. While I was there, everyday was a new activity I got to try my hands in, and I was like a kid learning how to work with my hands. My host was like a favorite uncle of mine. With a cigarette dangling from his lips, he proceeded to teach me how to plant potatoes, power hose a roof, and how to make a killer Bolognese. I also learned all the ways we can make our lives more sustainable. Tricks on how to conserve water while washing the dishes. How to effectively use compost. It was also one of the few times I saw everything has an eco-system. Everything is connected. This beautiful island exposed me to all the different ways to live. And I will carry these lessons in my heart.
