In the shadow of the Matterhorn
An early morning adventure to see the Matterhorn
On the border between Switzerland and Italy sits one of the most iconic mountains in the world. You probably recognise it from the popular chocolate bar Toblerone! Either way, it's real name is the Matterhorn and this mountain and the landscape that surrounds it will quickly become one of the most beautiful places you've ever seen.
The trip starts in Zermatt, a small mountain resort that sits in the shadow of the famous Matterhorn mountain. We only had a night to spare which gave us one sunrise mission which we were keen to make the most of. So, the alarm sounded the next morning at around 3am and we packed up a day-bag and made our way up to Lake Stellisee. This Lake is one of the 5-Seenweg (The Five Lakes Walk.) and is known for giving stunning reflections of the Matterhorn when you're blessed with the right conditions.
We made it up to the lake after around 2 hours of hiking and about 30 minutes to spare before sunrise. We set up and waited for the sun to appear. Then, right on time the sun started to rise above the horizon and began painting the clouds and the Matterhorn with vibrant colour.
We just stood and watched in awe as the light slowly crept down the mountain, changing it from red to orange to gold.
We were fortunate enough to have little wind on the day and had a perfect reflection of this beautiful scene on the lake in front of us. It was more stunning than we ever expected. The sun continued to transform the landscape around us as it rose higher above the mountains. You get to witness a completely new view every hour. Even though we were just staying for a couple of days, the Matterhorn gave us memories that will last a lifetime.
