The Yangshuo Fisherman
Exploring the banks of the Yulong River
In the south of China’s Guangxi region sits the county of Yangshuo, known for it's incredibly picturesque rivers and karst mountains.
One of the most famous things in the county is the Li River which runs from Guilin to the resort town of Yangshuo.
From the Li River runs a small tributary known as The Yulong River which flows through the Yulong River Valley. Life in this valley almost seems frozen in time. Unlike the busy Li River, shown above, the Yulong has no motorised vehicles. When the day draws to a close and tourists disappear, you'll find the locals travelling home or fishing for the last catch of the day, all still on traditional bamboo rafts. It's beautiful.
Day One: We came back to the same spot everyday to find one of the local fisherman throwing out his nets in the same stretch of water from sunrise to sunset. It was so inspiring to see some of the dedication and hard work of the people in rural China.
Day Two: After setting his nets down river a friend joins to help smack the water with his bamboo oar to startle the fish and make them swim straight into the trap.
Day Three: I can't imagine the wonders this man must have witnessed during his years on the water. We sat and watched all evening as he drifted up and down, recasting his nets and filling his basket with fish, before eventually disappearing up river and away into the sunset.
Just another day on the Yulong River.
