Athens: The Most Underrated City
Despite being the birthplace of democracy, today the city of Athens is often overlooked as merely a stopping point on the way to the Greek Islands. The capital of Greece has so much more to offer than a layover, however. For those looking to make a real visit out of their time in Athens, we highly recommend staying at the Grand Bretagne hotel. Easily our favorite hotel in Athens, the Grand Bretagne is home to a beautiful rooftop pool and view of the Acropolis in addition to all the accommodations one expects from a five star hotel.
Those looking for a high-end dining experience should head down to Piraeus, near the port of Athens, for Michelin-starred dining on the waterfront. Athens, of course, is also one of the oldest and most historic cities in the world, and a visit to the Acropolis and Acropolis Museum are going to be absolutely necessary for any history buffs in the group. We definitely would advise arriving there as early as possible to beat both the heat and the crowds. We would also recommend booking a guide ahead of time - saying that there is an abundance of history to learn while at the Acropolis is an understatement at best. Once you’ve finished with your history lesson, it’s time to head over to the historic neighborhood of Plaka to explore, grab authentic gyros at Thanasis, and have a couple of drinks at Baba au Rum.
