Road Tripping Northern Spain - pt.2
Spain // December 2018
This post is part 2 of 2 of a road trip story through the lesser explored parts of northern Spain, so if you didn’t read part one, I recommend you go check that out before carrying on here!
on the last post, I left off on the Cantabrian Mountains which was incredible and honestly made me feel like I was in and amongst the Alps! After this region, we headed to a spot that looked like a Norwegian village, and this is called Riaño - I have NEVER shared this information with anyone before so thank me later if you read this and head there! This place was magical! We arrived when it was dark and parked up right at the waterfront where we spent the night. When we woke up before sunrise, we headed up to a vantage point and sent the drone up. Sweet heavens, this place was MEGA! I’ll let you be the judge
Incase you're not convinced yet, tell me you dont want to visit this place after this!
After Riaño, we went to another spot which i have been HIGHLY reluctant to share because it took me ages to find it online - it is called Bardenas Reales, and is also known as the Navarre Desert. The clay rock formations here are simply out of control. Otherworldly is probably the best way for me to describe them! see for yourself!
I have to note though! This place is actually right next to a military base which is located in that desert. The reason it is not that known (I can only imagine) is because it is a military training grounds and most of the desert is actually off limits. We found out the hard way as we were woken up by military police knocking on our van window before sunrise, asking for ID and questioning us. After showing them all our camera gear, they believed that we were photographers simply trying to catch an awesome sunrise, and not a breaking bad lab on wheels!
I HIGHLY recommend exploring this region of Spain, it is so untouched and there are so many gems to be found, I’m sure I only just scratched the surface! Perfect place for a road trip as there are so many spots, and often are quite far from one another, so it is ideal to have a van to get around in (though not cheap). We did all this in a week and it was fairly rushed but we loved it!!
Feel free to ask any questions! Thanks for reading!
