Metelkova, the Artsy Side of Ljubljana
The corner where all the artists meet and create
Ecologic and alternative, Ljubljana is a very original city. A lot of events take place here every day: music, writing, theatre, arts… But the most creative part of Ljubljana is for sure the Metelkova, a small area located near the station, off one of the side streets outside the heart of the city.
It started to become a cultural center in 1993, when a collective of 200 volunteers occupied the place to protect it from being demolished. Artists and intellectuals, following alternative currents, created an independent association which is still active today.
Here, it’s possible to find one of the most famous and fascinating hostels in Ljubljana. I am talking about Hostel Celica, a former military prison that has been transformed into one of the most attractive accommodations in the whole city.
Metelkova is constantly transforming, when visiting it is always possible to bump into weird and cool art pieces which give you the sensation of entering a magical world. Monsters climbing the walls, shoes which seem to come directly from the movie Big Fish, and tons of graffiti are just a few of the many hallmarks located here. Additionally, a lot of events like musical shows, DJ sets, exhibitions, and lots more are often organised and attract a lot of visitors. You never get bored in Metelkova, the perfect place for free spirits!
