Exploring Metelkova

Ljubljana’s Alternative Neighborhood

Ljubljana is perhaps best known for its candy-colored, picturesque Old Town, but the city has an interesting subculture that’s much more alternative and edgy. In Ljubljana, you can find Metelkova, a tiny autonomous district that’s full of public art and museums. The area has had several purposes throughout history, but today, it’s the heart of Ljubljana’s alternative and artsy culture. When you walk into this little neighborhood, you’ll be shocked to see just how different it is from the rest of the city.

The area is full of run-down looking buildings that have been absolutely covered in interesting street art. I loved seeing all the interesting murals and sculptures! The area is apparently full of bars and nightclubs, but we unfortunately did not have time to visit them during our trip to Slovenia. The Metelkova district is just about a 20-minute walk from the center of the Old Town, so it’s a great place to stop by while you’re exploring the city.

When we were visiting, a choir had an impromptu performance in the central square of Metelkova, and I think there are frequent arts events in this area that might be worth checking out!
