Roaming Iceland Finding Hidden Gems
Founding a new & undiscovered waterfall
After accomplishing everything we had wanted to accomplish in the north we headed down to a waterfall called Selanjafoss. It is roughly a 4 hour 30 minute drive from Kirjufell to Selanjafoss. The drive is absolutely breathtaking so defiantly worth the long trip. Once we reached the Selanjafoss waterfall it was extremely over crowded so we decided to skip it and just continue on the same road, which then after 5km became an off-road track. One thing I would definitely recommend is getting a 4x4 car so you can go off-road and explore more of Iceland and get away from the compact crowds in the touristy spots. We found this waterfall on the off road track which is next to a river called Markarfljot. If you drive along this river on the off-road track you’ll see it on the opposite side of the river it’ll be visible right next to the impressive mountainous backdrop of the mountains. Drive past 4 river crossings and you should be able to see it. The trek involves crossing a small river and trekking up a steep hill but the waterfall itself is really beautiful and there is absolutely no one there. The surrounding landscape when you look down is so mesmerizing that the long hike becomes worth it. We had lunch next to the waterfall, which was amazing
