Diving into the Great Barrier Reef

Discovering life underwater in Cairns

Great Barrier Reef

A trip in Australia wouldn't be complete without an experience out in the Great Barrier Reef. Located at the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland, the reef is the world's most extensive coral reef system stretching for over 3000km. It supports a wide variety of life, and it's a world heritage site.

Doubtless, diving and snorkeling in Cairns are one of the main attractions for this reason. So we booked a diving experience with the Cairns Dive Centre for 180$, which included the price of a 30-minute introduction scuba diving lesson, snorkeling sessions, breakfast, lunch buffet, and endless coffee all day long. We departed at 7 am from Cairns marina and hit the reef about three hours later. If you suffer from ocean sickness, this will be a long way to go for you, but once you arrive, it will be more then worth it, I swear.

It was my first time exploring life beneath the water surface, and it was one of the best experiences of my life. The instructors guided us step by step, explaining all the procedures, and once we dived, it was just..wow..

I definitely recommend giving this a try at least once in your life, but I also encourage you to enjoy the coral's beauty and avoid any contact with the wildlife or reef. Also, try to avoid any chemical sunscreen as, sadly, the barrier reef is already under threat because of climate change, and sunscreen is absorbed in the coral, and is harmful.
