Kasbah Ait-Ben-Haddou

Our second stop was Kasbah ait Ben Haddou another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once we got off the bus we were welcomed by a rather odd guide named Mohammad. His orange scarf and the blue dress created a really funny contrast! But nevertheless, he was friendly and knowledgeable as he guided us step by step through the city.

To arrive at the Kasbah, you first must walk through a small village. All of the houses are made with mud and straw, it is truly a sign to see.

Before we got to the kasbah, we stopped at various spots to take in the magnificence of the city, the gorgeous brown buildings contrasted beautifully against the blue sky! Originally a fortified village, ait Ben Haddou was built along the caravan route between the Sahara desert and the current city of Marrakech. It is based on the side of the hill down the Ouarzazate River.

Scenes from Lawrence of Arabia, James Bond, The Mummy, Jesus of Nazareth, and the most famous series of the moment, Game of Thrones season 4 were filmed here.

Unfortunately, the city is all but abandoned, because of the draught of the river. However, when rains a lot the river rise 4m and cause a lot of problems. Because of this, the citizens moved to the other side of the valley.

When we get to the top of the city, it seems like you can see the whole world! Seeing the kasbah near the river followed by some desert dunes on the horizon is stunning!
