5 reasons to visit Crete
Crete was the first island that we visited during our Greece island hopping tour, and definitely just as amazing as all the other neighbouring islands.
Below are our top 5 reasons why you shouldn’t skip this island!
1) MOST CRYSTALLINE WATERS WE’VE EVER SEEN - Crete is fantastic for swimming and the waters had never been clearer. A great idea would be to rent a sailing yacht, visit Malia island, Skagiado, Chersonissos etc. – an ideal way for traversing the north coast.
Seitan Limania Beach was one of the most beautiful beaches we’ve ever seen! – see below (just stunning!):
2) RUGGED CANYONS – Crete has some of the most varied landscapes around, and countless gorges scattered about. You can go on different walks or even just take a ride through the canyon valleys. Did you know Crete even has the nickname “the island of the 100 canyons”?
3) HOSPITALITY LIKE NO OTHER: A population dedicated to culture and welcoming its guests. Create is a never-ending love story with food and raki (An unsweetened, often anise-flavoured alcoholic drink) Cretans have really figured out their lifestyle. It goes without saying that being among them is rarely dull. As a people, they are extremely spirited, and demonstrate a lot of strength and hospitality that cannot be found anywhere else in the world - It is no wonder they distinguish themselves from any other nations. The Cretan landscape is undeniably extremely artistic, but it was the family that hosted us that made this place impossible to forget.
4) BRILLIANT WEATHER conditions – even in the winter!
5) AMAZING FOOD - The owners of the place where we were staying at (Sunshine Hotel) took us out for a dinner the very first night (and each following as we kept on extending our stay because of how much fun – and good food – we were having). Something we are always in search of when traveling is good food and plenty of it and, oh, we found it here! We found it so much that you couldn’t possibly keep us away. The olive oil, the honey, the vegetables, the fruit—everything comes from the farm. Everything that doesn’t come from the sea, anyway. We tasted everything that we could: saganaki (fried cheese) – all kinds of cheese really, spanakopita (spinach pastry), soutzoukakia (meatballs), roast lamb, specialties like dakos (rusks topped with tomato, olive oil and cheese), grilled octopus – every possible seafood that we know exists, home produced wine and raki (An unsweetened, often anise-flavoured, alcoholic drink). We were seduced with what is surely the world’s most underrated cuisine. Yamas!
