Jiufen Old Street 九份
Jiufen, Taiwan
Jiufen is a small town in the mountains outside of Taipei. It used to be a gold mining town. The Japanese found it years ago during the Qing Dynasty where gold was discovered. Jiufen became a popular destination from Spirited Away, which is a Japanese anime film. In Jiufen, you can find many tea houses and other Taiwanese delicacies.
Jiufen Old Street holds many shops, food establishments, clothing stores and tea shops where you can experience the culture of Taiwan.
Jiufen can get really crowded, especially during the holidays and weekends. Be prepared for many people taking pictures for there are many photo opportunities.
Ladies can experience more of the culture by renting a Qipao for the day. A Qipao (Cheongsam) is a traditional Chinese dress. It costs about 700 to 800 NTD depending on the package. You can also purchase a Qipao at one of the shops. Some of the shops may have a custom fitting as well!
When I visited Jiufen the second time, I hiked the Keelung Mountain trail, which is nearby the old street. There are many stairs on this trail, but the view is worth it. You could see stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. I ended the day watching the sunset on the top of Keelung Mountain.
I missed the last bus going back to Taipei, so I shared a cab with friendly Japanese girls who were visiting Taiwan.
Jiufen is such a beautiful destination to visit, especially if you are staying in Taipei. It is a short bus ride away!
