Comino Island – Malta’s Blue Gem
Malta// 2019
Comino Island is the smallest named island of the archipelago of Malta and debatably the one packing the biggest punch relative to it’s size! This place is absolutely incredible. I named this post “Malta’s Blue Gem” – which goes without saying is a direct reference to the ridiculous water colour found around the Island. It’s main attraction is called the Blue Lagoon, which now seems quite commercial, but is a must visit nonetheless! I visited Comino with my girlfriend Emma and her brother and sister. We actually went with a private charter company called Azure Ultra, who have gorgeous private boats operating from the harbour of Birgu, which is east of the capital Valleta, located more or less in a world heritage site.
- quick intermission here – for those interested in history, Malta is an incredible place to visit! It has countless years of startling history, with so many significant happenings that have ultimately led Malta to become what it is today! I’m not going to get into it, but it had to be mentioned as it is a super fascinating place!
- Back to Comino! The Blue Lagoon is a hotspot for tourism now with countless operaters as well as private charters going there – I must say it makes perfect sense! The shades of blue here can’t be described and it seriously is a perfect location to spend a day of chilling in the sun and floating around in the Mediterranean sea! If at all possible, go on a boat that offers the option of staying on board (as opposed to a drop off on the island) – as the main parts of the beach there get super busy, where as if you’re on a boat whether its big or small, you will always have a spot to lay down and enjoy the weather.
We also had lunch on board at the Blue Lagoon, whereafter we cruised over to a spot I had found online called Crystal Lagoon. This location has also been growing in popularity and once again with good reason! A perfect cave along the gorgeous cliff coastline of Comino, where you can sail or kayak in (or of course swim). When you look up, there is a massive hole which seems to have appeared out of nowhere (very similar to coral lagoon on the main island of Malta also). Another great thing about this place, it is AMAZING for photography! Of course these photos cant be captured with your regular phone as it does require having the right lens for the job (super wide angle – these are shot at 14mm). Even without camera or photos, this place is definitely worth a visit, what a gorgeous place!
I highly recommend making a visit out to Comino Island if you find yourself in a situation going to a Malta and I can only recommend looking into Azure Ultra, as we had an amazing day with them!
